It is not an official ranking of the world’s ten largest fires. The cases appear in chronological order; a nationwide fire season cannot be compared directly with a single building fire.

1. Ycuá Bolaños supermarket fire — Paraguay, 2004
When and where: August 1, 2004, Asunción. Reported impact: approximately 400 deaths, more than 300 injured and roughly 1,000 people present.

A Sunday visit to the Ycuá Bolaños supermarket became a mass-casualty disaster when fire and smoke spread through the building. Accounts describe a fire associated with the food-service area and severe failures in escape arrangements. The danger was not limited to people close to the flames: smoke rapidly compromised the space people needed to move through.
Published death totals are not uniform. A medical report available through the U.S. National Library of Medicine reports 424 deaths, while other accounts give different totals. This guide therefore uses approximately 400, rather than presenting one count as universally agreed. The injuries also created an enormous demand for emergency and burn care.

2. Black Saturday bushfires — Australia, 2009
When and where: February 7, 2009, Victoria. Reported impact: 173 deaths, 414 injured, more than 450,000 hectares burned and more than 2,000 homes destroyed.

Black Saturday refers to multiple bushfires across Victoria, rather than one continuous ignition. Extreme heat, dry vegetation and strong winds created conditions in which fires could move quickly and overwhelm communities. A wind change altered fire behavior and exposed areas that had previously appeared less threatened.
The Country Fire Authority’s retrospective records the immense human and physical losses. The disaster led to a royal commission and sustained scrutiny of warnings, community preparedness and decisions about leaving threatened areas. Its significance extends beyond hectares: it changed how Australians discuss the risks of remaining in the path of a severe bushfire.

3. Comayagua prison fire — Honduras, 2012
When and where: overnight February 14–15, 2012, Comayagua. Reported impact: 361 deaths; 856 prisoners were listed on the prison roster.

The Comayagua prison fire illustrates the consequences of a fire in a place where occupants cannot independently leave. People were confined behind locked barriers while smoke and flames spread. Delays and failures in releasing prisoners made the escape problem fundamentally different from that of an ordinary public building.
Early news reports carried provisional casualty figures; the later event record used here lists 361 deaths. The number of prisoners on the roster describes the institution’s population, not a confirmed count of people exposed in one room. The central safety issue is clear without treating every early report about the ignition as settled fact: people dependent on others for release need a reliable emergency response.

4. Kiss nightclub fire — Brazil, 2013
When and where: January 27, 2013, Santa Maria. Reported impact: 242 deaths and more than 630 injured.

A pyrotechnic effect used during a performance ignited acoustic foam at the Kiss nightclub. Fire spread through the ceiling material, producing toxic smoke in a crowded indoor venue. Visibility, orientation and the ability to reach a usable way out deteriorated rapidly.
The disaster demonstrates how an entertainment effect, combustible interior finish and difficult evacuation can interact. It also shows why a venue’s fire risk cannot be judged simply by the size of the visible flame. Smoke exposure can incapacitate people before they reach an exit, and crowd movement becomes harder as people lose sight of the route.

5. Tianjin port fire and explosions — China, 2015
When and where: August 12, 2015, Tianjin’s port area. Reported impact: 165 confirmed deaths, eight missing people, 798 injured and 304 buildings damaged.

A fire at a hazardous-goods warehouse escalated into major explosions, damaging buildings and infrastructure beyond the immediate storage site. Tianjin is included as a combined fire-and-explosion disaster. The total harm cannot be attributed to flames alone: blast effects and hazardous materials were central to the event.
The investigation figures distinguish confirmed deaths from missing people. They also describe 304 buildings as damaged, which must not be rewritten as 304 buildings destroyed. The case brings industrial land use, chemical inventories, storage conditions and responder access to hazard information into the same safety discussion.
6. Camp Fire — California, United States, 2018
When and where: November 8–25, 2018, Butte County. Reported impact: 85 deaths, 18,804 structures destroyed, 153,336 acres burned and more than 50,000 people displaced.

The Camp Fire began after a failure in electrical transmission equipment and spread through dry vegetation under strong winds. Paradise and nearby communities suffered devastating losses. Wind-driven embers helped carry fire into developed areas, where burning buildings added new sources of heat and ignition.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology reconstructed the fire’s progression in a detailed case study. Its timeline shows why distance from the visible fire front can be a poor measure of available evacuation time. Fire, road congestion and rapidly changing conditions affected the same communities at once.

7. Black Summer bushfire season — Australia, 2019–2020
Scope: Australia’s 2019–2020 fire season. Reported impact: 33 direct deaths, more than 24 million hectares burned in broad national estimates, and more than 3,000 buildings destroyed.

Black Summer was a prolonged season of fires across multiple regions. Heat, drought and dry fuels contributed to extreme conditions, while smoke affected people far beyond the fire edges. The destruction involved homes, ecosystems, infrastructure and livelihoods over many months.
A widely reported wildlife study estimated that nearly three billion animals were killed or displaced. That figure is an estimate of combined mortality and displacement, not three billion confirmed animal deaths. Likewise, the 33 direct deaths shown here should not be treated as the entire health burden: estimates of smoke-related mortality use different methods and belong in a separate category. National burned-area estimates also differ according to the vegetation and regions included.

8. Canada’s record wildfire season — 2023
Scope: a nationwide fire season. Reported impact: more than 6,500 fires, with published evacuation or displacement estimates of roughly 185,000–232,000 people.

Canada’s 2023 wildfire season combined extensive burning with unusually widespread smoke. Communities faced evacuation and disruption, while smoke traveled across borders. NASA documented smoke reaching Europe after crossing the Atlantic; major smoke episodes also affected air quality in the United States.
The infographic uses the rounded figure “200,000+ evacuated,” reflecting higher published estimates. The range above makes the variation between reporting dates and definitions visible. The page deliberately avoids selecting a single burned-area number from different monitoring systems. Reports of eight firefighter deaths during the season should also not be read as a claim that every death occurred directly in flames.
9. Lahaina wildfire — Maui, United States, 2023
When and where: August 8, 2023, Lahaina, Maui. Reported impact: at least 102 deaths, more than 2,200 buildings destroyed and approximately 2,170 acres burned in Lahaina.

Strong winds, dry fuels and the spread of fire into the town produced catastrophic damage in Lahaina. The investigation described an initial ignition associated with downed electrical lines and later rekindling. The speed of the disaster placed severe pressure on warning, communication and evacuation systems.
The losses included homes, businesses and places central to the community’s cultural history. The area and building figures here refer to Lahaina; they are not totals for every fire in Hawaii that year. Early damage assessments and later records also have different reporting dates, which is why the infographic uses rounded building and area figures.

10. Palisades and Eaton fires — Los Angeles, United States, 2025
When and where: January 7–31, 2025, Los Angeles County. Combined impact: 31 direct deaths, 16,255 structures destroyed and 37,469 acres burned.

The Palisades and Eaton fires caused extensive destruction in the Los Angeles region during strong winds and dry conditions. They are grouped here to examine a closely connected regional disaster, while preserving the boundary of the statistics: these figures cover only these two fires, not every Southern California fire in January 2025.
The combined totals are transparent: 6,837 plus 9,418 destroyed structures equals 16,255; 23,448 plus 14,021 acres equals 37,469; and 12 plus 19 direct deaths equals 31. Both fires reached full containment on January 31. Later estimates of broader excess mortality measure a different outcome and are not added to the direct death toll.

What these disasters teach about fire safety
The circumstances differ, but several recurring problems connect indoor fires, industrial incidents and wildfires:
- Escape must remain possible. Doors, corridors, roads and emergency-release procedures are part of the same basic requirement: people need a usable path to safety.
- Smoke deserves immediate attention. Indoors, it can obscure exits and incapacitate occupants. Outdoors, it can create health risks across a much larger area than the burn perimeter.
- People have different evacuation needs. A plan must account for restricted movement, disability, age, language, transport access and dependence on staff or caregivers.
- Changing conditions can invalidate a plan. Wind shifts, embers, power failures and blocked routes require alternatives and timely information from local authorities.
- Containment does not end the disaster. Housing loss, environmental damage, trauma and disrupted services can continue long after active burning stops.
At home, make and practice an escape plan, identify available ways out, agree on an outside meeting place and arrange help for anyone who needs it. During a fire, leave when it is safe to do so, stay out and contact emergency services from a safe location. For wildfires and hazardous-materials incidents, follow the instructions of local emergency authorities; the correct protective action depends on the incident. What was the biggest fire of the 21st century?
There is no single answer without a metric. Burned area, direct deaths, smoke-related health effects, destroyed structures and financial losses produce different comparisons. This article selects ten consequential non-war events and seasons; it does not establish a statistically ranked global top ten.
Which fire in this selection had the highest reported death toll?
The Ycuá Bolaños supermarket fire has the highest reported death toll among these selected cases, at approximately 400, with variation between sources. That statement applies to this selection only. It is not a claim to identify the deadliest fire worldwide since 2001.
Why include entire wildfire seasons beside individual fires?
Seasons such as Black Summer and Canada’s 2023 season explain cumulative disruption, ecological damage and long-distance smoke. They are explicitly labeled as seasons because their totals are not directly comparable with one nightclub, prison or supermarket fire.
Does this guide include fires caused by war?
No. War-related fires are excluded. The selection includes civilian building fires, industrial fire and explosion events, and wildfires. It does not assume that every non-war fire was accidental.
Are smoke-related deaths included in the death figures?
Indoor fire death tolls can include deaths from smoke inhalation. For wildfire seasons, direct reported deaths are kept separate from population-level estimates of deaths associated with smoke or excess mortality. Those categories use different methods and should not be added without a clear study design.
Are the illustrations real photographs of these disasters?
No. Every disaster scene in this series is an AI reconstruction. The images illustrate the subject and summarize selected figures; the linked documents and reporting, rather than the generated scenes, are the evidence for the historical claims.
